Roof Area Calculator

Calculate actual sloped roof area from a horizontal footprint and pitch, or add measured roof planes for a more detailed estimate.

How do you want to calculate roof area?

Already know the sloped roof area? Estimate shingle bundles instead.

Use this method for a simple rectangular roof projection with one pitch. Dormers, additions, mixed slopes or major cutouts should be entered as separate roof planes.

Projected roof length

Measure horizontally, not along the roof surface.

Projected roof width

Measure horizontally, not along the roof surface.

Roof area calculation methods

Quick estimate

Use this method for a simple rectangular roof projection with one pitch. Dormers, additions, mixed slopes or major cutouts should be entered as separate roof planes.

Use horizontal roof-edge dimensions when the roof footprint already includes overhangs. If measurements describe the building footprint, add all four overhangs explicitly. Do not guess an unknown overhang.

Add roof planes

Add each sloped plane once. Enter dimensions as the horizontal shape seen from above, not as measurements along the roof surface.

Divide a complex roof into non-overlapping rectangles, triangles and trapezoids. Planes may use different pitches. Do not use negative shapes to remove openings, and sum full-precision plane areas before rounding for display.

Roof area formulas

Quick estimate formulas

  • horizontal_projected_area = projected_roof_length × projected_roof_width
  • roof_surface_area = horizontal_projected_area × pitch_multiplier
  • roofing_squares = roof_surface_area / 100

Roof plane formulas

  • rectangle_projected_area = length × width
  • triangle_projected_area = base × perpendicular_height / 2
  • trapezoid_projected_area = (side_a + side_b) × perpendicular_height / 2
  • plane_surface_area = plane_projected_area × plane_pitch_multiplier
  • total_projected_area = Σ plane_projected_area
  • total_roof_surface_area = Σ plane_surface_area
  • roofing_squares = total_roof_surface_area / 100

Calculations preserve full precision and round only for display.

What area does this calculator measure?

This calculator estimates the sloped surface area of a roof, not the floor area of the home. It starts with horizontal projected dimensions and applies a pitch multiplier. The result is shown in square feet and roofing squares before waste.

Roof footprint vs. roof surface area

The roof footprint is the horizontal shape seen from above. Roof surface area follows the slope and is therefore equal to or larger than the footprint. Overhangs are part of the roof footprint even when they extend beyond the building walls.

How to calculate a simple roof area

Measure the full horizontal roof length and width, including overhangs. Multiply length by width to get projected area, then multiply by the pitch multiplier. This works for a simple gable, hip or shed roof when the full projection is rectangular and the main surfaces use the same pitch.

roof surface area = projected length × projected width × pitch multiplier

Do not know the multiplier? Calculate your roof pitch first.

How to divide a complex roof into planes

Break the horizontal roof plan into non-overlapping rectangles, triangles and trapezoids. Enter every plane once, use its own pitch when slopes differ, and let the calculator sum the unrounded surface areas. Do not enter negative shapes to remove penetrations.

Rectangle

Projected area = length × width.

Triangle

Projected area = base × perpendicular height ÷ 2.

Trapezoid

Projected area = (parallel side A + parallel side B) × perpendicular height ÷ 2.

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area. A 1,342 sq ft roof is 13.42 roofing squares before waste. Roofing squares describe area; they do not prove how many shingle bundles a product covers.

Example: simple roof area

A 40 ft by 30 ft roof footprint has 1,200 sq ft of horizontal projected area. At 6:12, the multiplier is approximately 1.1180. The sloped roof area is 1,200 × 1.1180 = about 1,341.6 sq ft, or 13.42 roofing squares before waste.

Why waste is not included here

Roof area is a geometric result. Waste depends on cuts, layout, roof complexity, product and installation decisions. Need Materials keeps area separate so the next calculation can show clean area, waste allowance and package rounding instead of blending them into one unexplained number.

Add waste and product coverage in the Roof Shingle Calculator.

Measurement limits and safety

Ground measurements, plans and roof reports can all contain uncertainty. Do not climb onto a roof without appropriate training and fall protection. Complex roofs, uncertain overhangs or high-value purchases should be checked against plans or a professional measurement report.

Roof area calculator FAQ

Is roof area the same as house square footage?

No. House square footage may include multiple floors and normally excludes roof overhangs. Roof surface area depends on the building footprint, overhangs, roof shape and pitch.

Do I include roof overhangs?

Yes. Use the roof-edge dimensions or add each overhang to the building footprint. Do not guess an unknown overhang.

Does this calculator add waste?

No. It reports geometric roof surface area before waste. Continue to the shingle calculator to add a visible waste allowance and product coverage.

Can I use one length and width for a hip roof?

Yes, when the complete horizontal projection is rectangular and all main roof planes have the same pitch. If pitches or sections differ, use the roof-planes method.

Should I subtract skylights or chimneys?

Not automatically. Penetrations can still create cuts and waste, so subtracting their area without a layout can understate materials. A detailed professional takeoff may treat them differently.

How many square feet are in one roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area.
